Valencia player profiles

Valencia players collect losers' medals at last year's final
BBC Sport Online profiles Champions League finalists Valencia.

Santiago Canizares
Goalkeeper
Age 32:

Peroxide blonde Canizares is an excellent shot stopper and is solid at crosses. Currently battling with Real Madrid's Iker Casillas for the Spanish number one shirt and hopes to make the position his own with an impressive display in the final.

Andres Palop
Goalkeeper
Age 27:

Played 15 league games last season when Canizares was injured, conceding only 13 goals. Good in one-on-one situations, he provides top class goalkeeping back-up for Valencia.

Fabian Ayala
Fabian Ayala
Defender
Age 28:

The Argentine national team captain has been Valencia's outstanding player this season, leading the defence with authority since his arrival from AC Milan.

Has formed a rock-solid partnership with his countryman Pellegrino. A threat at set pieces, with two Champions League goals to his credit this term.

Mauricio Pellegrino
Defender
Age 29:

Tall centre-back who has shone at the Mestalla this term, undoubtedly helped by the presence of Ayala alongside him.

Joachim Bjorklund
Defender
Age 30:

Versatile Swede who missed out on a place in last year's final defeat to Real Madrid and is likely to be on the bench again this time.

Miroslav Djukic
Defender
Age 35:

Djukic has been pushed out of the starting line-up recently by the flourishing Ayala-Pellegrino partnership.

Yet still a classy centre-back and as reliable as ever.

Jocelyn Angloma
Jocelyn Angloma
Defender
Age 35:

Another veteran defender and currently in the best form of his career.

Excellent positional play as well as adventurous surges forward make the Frenchman a formidable full-back.

Will be bidding for the second European Cup win of his career following success with Marseille in 1993.

Amedeo Carboni
Defender
Age 36:

No-nonsense Italian left-back who missed last year's final because of suspension.

Has forged an excellent understanding with Argentine midfielder Kily.

Fabio Aurelio
Defender
Age 21:

Brazilian full-back who made his Champions League debut in the semi-final second leg against Leeds United.

Slightly uncertain when bringing the ball forward, but otherwise calm in his defensive duties.

Gaizka Mendieta
Gaizka Mendieta
Midfielder
Age 27:

Inspirational club captain and Spanish international who will want to make amends for a disappointing performance in last year's final.

Plays on the right side of midfield but drifts inside to awesome effect.

Has an uncanny ability to hit the killer pass, is a good dribbler and has an eye for goal. Bayern will need to keep him shackled if they are to prevail.

Kily Gonzalez
Midfielder
Age 26:

Skilled left-sided midfielder, who along with Mendieta provides excellent balance to the Valencia midfield.

His form has not been as impressive as it was last term, but he will still provide a serious threat to Bayern's defence.

Ruben Baraja
Ruben Baraja
Midfielder
Age 25:

Baraja was given the tough task of filling the void in central midfield after Francisco Farinos and Gerard left at the end of last season.

But he has responded superbly and should anchor Valencia's midfield in Milan.

Miguel Angel Angulo
Midfielder
Age 23:

A model of consistency, but likely to be on the bench if Cuper opts to play Pablo Aimar behind the front two.

Pablo Aimar
Midfielder
Age 21:

Vicente
Aimar has revitalised the Valencia side since joining from River Plate at the end of January.

The slight, skilful Argentine has lifted the creative burden from the shoulders of Mendieta and given the side a more adventurous and less predictable look.

Vicente
Midfielder
Age 19:

The latest talent off the Valencia midfield production line.

An astute passer of the ball with a keen eye for goal. Won his first Spanish international cap earlier in the season.

He was the recipient of a horrific tackle from Leeds striker Alan Smith in the semi-final second leg.

Didier Deschamps
Midfielder
Age 31:

An experienced campaigner who could make history by becoming the first player to win the Champions League with three different clubs after previous triumphs with Marseille and Juventus.

A compact midfielder and technically accomplished midfielder who provides a base for the side's more creative talents to play off.

However, he was rarely featured for Valencia's first-team this season and is likely to start on the bench against Bayern.

Zlatko Zahovic
Midfielder
Age 30:

Slovenian midfielder mainly used as a substitute since joining during the close season.

Combines outstanding skill with impressive strength and is also a threat from free-kicks. Likely to start from the bench, but expect to see him at some stage.

Adrian Ilie
Striker
Age 27:

The Romanian international's season has been plagued by injury, but he is now fit and has a outside chance of a place among the substitutes.

Juan Sanchez
Striker
Age 29:

Sanchez has emerged as Valencia's hero this term, capping a fine season with the first two goals in the 3-0 win over Leeds in the semi-finals.

Fast and skilful, he has provided a good foil to the tall, powerful Carew in attack.

John Carew
Striker
Age 21:

Muscular Norwegian international who joined from Rosenborg over the summer.

Has aquired the priceless habit of scoring goals even when the team are not playing particularly well, as displayed against Arsenal in the quarter-final second leg when he scored his side's winner.

Diego Alonso
Striker
Age 26:

The busy Uruguayan forward has scored four goals in the Champions League so far this term but is likely to have to be content with a place on the bench.
