The Austrian league has banned vuvuzelas from domestic stadiums, saying the loud plastic trumpets could lead to aggressive behaviour by fans.
An Austrian club had asked the league for permission to give away vuvuzelas at a match.
The noisy instruments, an intrinsic part of South African football, caused controversy at last month's Confederations Cup.
Some players and those watching the games who were not from South Africa complained about the noise.
European broadcasters said that the incessant noise interfered with commentaries.
The difference of opinion over the vuvuzela has now reached Austria, as one club, Wiener Neustadt, had asked the league for permission to give away 150 of the instruments for Friday's season-opening match against Austria Kaernten.
League spokesman Christian Kirchner said: "Vuvuzelas can be used as projectiles. They can also cause aggression by other fans."
Despite this view, football's world governing body Fifa has said that it will not exclude vuvuzelas from next year's World Cup.
