Merreikh kick-off Cecafa in style

Atraco versus El-Merreikh

Hosts El Merreikh earned a big win on the opening day of the Cecafa club championship in Sudan.

They beat Atraco of Rwanda 6-1 in their first game of the club tournament for East and Central Africa.

In the other game on the first day of competition, Kenyan champions Mathare United beat Kartileh of Djibouti 3-0.

Merreikh are using the tournament as preparation for the group stages of the African champions league.

Merreikh's coach said he was delighted with the performance, especially as many of his first choice players had been away on international duty.

Former Enyimba star striker Stephen Worgu was in the starting line-up but did not get on the score sheet.

Instead it was his Nigerian compatriot Endurance Idahor who scored twice.

On Wednesday in group B Tanzania's Prisons take on Benadir Telecom of Somalia and guests TP Mazembe of DR Congo play Uganda's KCC.

In group C, the Cecafa Club Championship holders, Tusker of Kenya, meet the other Sudanese team Hay-al-Arab and Inter Stars of Burundi play Miembeni from Zanzibar.
