Equatorial Guinea lift AWC trophy
Equatorial Guinea became only the second side to win the African Women's Championship on Saturday after beating South Africa 2-1 in the final in Malabo.
The home side dominated the early exchanges and took the lead through Blessing Naduju in the 22nd minute.
But the visitors rallied and drew level in the 35th minute when striker Alice Mattlou hit powerful shot from the edge of the box for her sixth goal of the tournament.
However, Genevova Anonma crowned her impressive showing in the tournament with a stand-out goal in the 66th minute that sealed victory for Equatorial Guinea.
Anonma curled in her sixth goal of the tournament from a free-kick that made her the joint top scorer.
Meanwhile, five-time champions Nigeria won the bronze medal after beating Cameroon 4-3 on penalties.
The game was tied at 1-1 after extra time.
The Super Falcons opened regulation-time scoring after 28 minutes when Maureen Eke unleashed a piledriver from 25 yards that beat Cameroon goalkeeper Ndongo Fouda.
The Cameroonians drew level in the 64th minute with striker Aboudi Onguene taking advantage of a defensive slip up.
Bella Francois and Mbida Seraphine fluffed their penalty kicks after full time to hand Nigeria the bronze medal.
