Kalou sends Ivory Coast through

Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Salomon Kalou

Salomon Kalou scored in the 81st minute to give the Ivory Coast a 1-0 victory over Australia on Wednesday.

The win sends the Ivory Coast into the quarter-finals at their first ever men's Olympic football tournament.

Ivory Coast will face 1996 gold medallists Nigeria on Saturday.

Kalou, who wasted several chances in both halves, finally got on the scoresheet as he volleyed home a pass from Gervinho.

The goal killed the hopes of the Australians, who needed a victory to advance.

In the group's other game Argentina maintained their 100% record with a 2-0 win over Serbia.

The Ivorians finished second in Group A behind winners Argentina and ahead of the Australians in third place, Serbia were bottom with one point.
