Early strike gives Zamalek victory

Champions League logo An early goal was enough to give Egyptian side Zamalek three points as they beat Dynamos of Zimbabwe 1-0 in Group A of the Champions League in Cairo on Sunday.

Defender Amr El Safti put Zamalek ahead in the fourth minute, pouncing on a loose ball following a corner that the Dynamos defence was unable to clear away.

Both sides went on to hit the woodwork in the first half, and Dynamos came close with a break five minutes from full-time, but Edward Sadomba had his shot blocked.

Zamalek, who did enough for victory, were without injured Ghana striker Junior Agogo.

Dynamos had caused a huge upset by knocking 2007 Champions League winners Etoile du Sahel out of the tournament two months ago.

The victory leaves Al Ahly on top of the group with four points, while Zamalek and Dynamos each have three points.

Meanwhile, Nigerian club Enyimba put their campaign back on track with an impressive 2-0 home win over Coton Sport of Cameroon in Aba on Sunday.

The win moves Enyimba into second place in Group B, following their 3-2 defeat away to Al Hilal of Sudan in their opening game.

Enyimba took the lead a minute before half time when Ezenwa Otorogo scored from close range after a shot by Stephen Worgu was spilled by the Coton Sport goalkeeper.

Worgu was on target two minutes after the break, coming one-on-one with the keeper to fire in his 11th goal of this season's Champions League campaign.
