Togo's Hawks fly high in Group 9

Togo

Togo moved top of Group Nine of the 2008 Nations Cup qualifiers after beating Sierra Leone 3-1 in Lome on Saturday.

The win takes Togo to six points, one clear of Mali whose dreams of going top were thwarted as they were held 1-1 by Benin on Sunday.

The visitors took a surprise lead in Bamako shortly before half-time as Ognonbiyi Mduriola stunned the home crowd.

The Eagles took the game to Benin in the second half and equalised early in the second half through a Frederic Kanoute penalty.

Despite late pressure, Mali could not find a way through the Beninois defence to gain all three points.

On Saturday, Emmanuel Adebayor and Olufade Adekanmi fired their side into a 2-0 lead.

After Mohamed Kallon pulled a goal back for Sierra Leone, Adebayor scored his second to give coach Stephen Keshi a win in his first game back in charge of Togo.

Mali's Eagles, who have four points, can regain group control if they beat Benin (3 points) in Bamako on Sunday.

Arsenal forward Adebayor was the key man for Togo, breaking the deadlock in the 37th minute with a glancing header.

After Olufade doubled the home side's lead after 62 minutes, the Leone Stars hit back as star player Mohamed Kallon dribbled past two defenders before firing home in the 77th minute.

The goal was Sierra Leone's first of the 2008 Nations Cup qualifying campaign.

Hopes of a Sierra Leonean revival were dashed when Olufade set up Adebayor for his second of the evening, and the lanky forward headed home with five minutes remaining to secure the points.

After three games, Sierra Leone are bottom of Group 9 with just one point.
