European Preview: Italy

Samuel Kuffour
Both Lazio and Roma failed in their bids to sign Kuffour

BBC Sport Online's Filippo Maria Ricci looks at the Italian Serie A where Africans have always been in the shadow of George Weah.

African, and particularly Ghanaian, defenders grabbed the headlines in Italy over the Summer, but in the end the much rumoured transfers of Samuel Kuffour and Mohammed Gargo weren't finalised.

Kuffour's club, Bayern Munich were contacted by Lazio and then by AS Roma, but Bayern stopped the moves, even turning down a £10m offer from the Italian champions.

Gargo of Udinese also attracted the interests of Lazio, and then seemed to be on his way to Inter Milan, but the transfer suddenly collapsed.

Mohammed Gargo
Lazio and Roma are still chasing a defender, but Ghanaian youngster of Nigerian origins Daniel Ola has been brought into the first team at Lazio.

Roma, meanwhile, signed Ivorian defender Saliou Lassissi from Parma via Fiorentina, where he spent last season on loan. But the youngster broke his leg in a preseason friendly and will be out of contention for several months.

So, much ado about nothing for African players in Italy.

There are 18 players from the continent in the 18 teams at the moment, some of them playing with the youth teams, and there have been few significative moves.

South African striker, Siyabonga Nomvete, joined Udinese from Kaizer Chiefs and made an immediate impact with his speed.

Sierra Leone striker Mohammed Kallon will get a chance to prove himself at Inter this season.

After six seasons of being loaned out by the Milan giants they have finally decided to keep him this year after his goalscoring feats in pre-season games.

Nigerian striker Mohammed Aliyu has also been kept in the squad by AC Milan after a season on loan to Monza.

At the end of the last season Nigerian youngster Oluwashegun Omolade grabbed the headlines when he was racially abused by the supporters of his Serie B team Treviso, with his team mates entering the field with their faces painted black as a sign of solidarity.

Patrick Mboma
Treviso were relegated, but Omolade has been sold to newly promoted Torino, and will play in Serie A this season.

Torino have also loaned Senegalese midfielder Djibril Diawara to the English Premiership side Bolton.

Another newly promoted team, Venezia, have loaned out to Serie C1 side L'Aquila, Nigerian striker Kenneth Zeigbo, who seemed to have disappeared in the last two seasons.

Another promoted side, Chievo have signed Ivorian Mehdi Mustapha Kamara from third division side Catanzaro.

Cameroonians Pierre Nlend Wome and Patrick Mboma have been confirmed at Bologna and Parma, the latter club also having Ghanaian Stephen Appiah.
