South Africa take no chances

Sign
South Africa on Wednesday began their preparations for the weekend African Nations Cup qualifier against Mauritius, hoping to seal their place at Mali 2002 by Saturday night.

Bafana Bafana play against the Indian Ocean islanders in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth, knowing that a win would effectively put them through to next year's Nations Cup finals.

The last of South Africa's foreign-based contingent arrived on Wednesday for training in Port Elizabeth with Celta Vigo's Benni McCarthy and Sibusiso Zuma, of the Danish club FC Copenhagen, the final two players to arrive.

Benni McCarthy
South Africa have a virtually full-strength squad for the match against lightweight opposition, who have just one point from three matches in the qualifying group.

Controversial selection

The only key players missing are captain Lucas Radebe, who is injured, and fellow defender Mark Fish who continues to reject call-ups by coach Carlos Queiroz.

On Tuesday, Queiroz added Jacob Tshisevhe of Kaizer Chiefs to the squad as an extra defender but walked straight into another controversy.

The Portuguese trainer has been dogged by media criticism of his selections since taking over the coaching position last September and the inclusion of Tshisevhe brought about howls of derision from journalists when the announcement was made.

I feel Tshisevhe is the right choice to maintain the balance of the squad
Coach Carlos Queiroz

Tshisevhe, who won the last of his four caps for South Africa in January 1997, has played only one club match since coming back from a two-month injury lay-off.

Queiroz admitted at a press conference that he had only watched the player's performance for his club last Sunday on video tape.

Mauritius ready

Mauritius arrived in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday without three key players. Desire Periatambee of FC Grenoble in France and Robert Rateau and Ricardo Naboth, who both play on the French-controlled island of Reunion, have been allowed to honour club commitments instead of playing in the Nations Cup qualifier.

Queiroz
Mauritius have three South African-based players in their 18-man squad and one of them, Jean-Marc Ithier of Cape Town club Santos, warned on Wednesday that the time was ripe for South Africa to "bite the dust".

Saturday's match is the eighth between South Africa and Mauritius in the last seven years. South Africa have won four of the last seven with three draws.
