Souvenir warning for Wembley fans

The match marks the end of 77 years of footballing tradition beneath the famous twin towers, which disappear under the bulldozers in early November.

Police have issued special advice to supporters, wherever they watch the game, to help them "celebrate in safety".

Alongside the usual suggestions to use public transport and arrive early at the ground, fans are warned: "Please don't attempt to leave Wembley with a 'souvenir' - police will treat this as theft."

Fans can get their hands on parts of the London venue legally when it is chopped up and sold off next month.

Commander David Smith, head of police operations at Wembley, said: "This is a remarkable historic occasion, which we want people everywhere in London to be able to celebrate in safety.

"We want all those coming to the match and those who will see it in pubs and clubs to be able to enjoy themselves in a safe and trouble free environment."

Planning for the game has stretched back months and included the German police, the Football Association and the National Criminal Intelligence Service.

The Metropolitan Police say they want the game to be a "fitting tribute to the history of the twin towers".

Other advice for fans includes:

• Do not come to Wembley if you don't have a valid ticket.

• If you do have a ticket keep it safe.

• Try to avoid the Wembley area if you are not going to the match.

• Anyone found trying to sell tickets outside the stadium will be arrested and the tickets confiscated.
