Gers gambling with Boyd sale

Former Rangers and Scotland striker Billy Dodds gives his view on the possible departure of Kris Boyd from Ibrox for Birmingham City in the English Championship. By Billy Dodds

If Rangers, one of the top clubs in Scotland, suddenly decide they're going to sell their top goal-scorer it just shows you the scary financial situation they find themselves in.

At a time when they are only five points off the lead in the Scottish Premier League, it must be worrying for Rangers fans that the club will - or have to - allow that to happen.

This is the market Rangers are dealing in though. They go and buy Kyle Lafferty and Steven Davis in the summer for £3m or so, and then go and sell somebody for £3m six months later.

They must have some books to balance somewhere because they would like to get a lot of other players out before Kris Boyd.

Who knows? Maybe the captain Barry Ferguson too, on top of that.

I spoke to Kris on Monday and he didn't know anything about any move then.

All he was interested in were the two goals he had scored at the weekend to help the team beat Inverness Caley Thistle.

Kris is a Rangers fan. He's delighted to be at Ibrox, and so eager to do his best for the club.

I definitely wouldn't say any of this has come about through Kris Boyd's doing, that's for sure.

I would say if Rangers do let him go, Walter Smith will need to strengthen his front line again.

But I wonder if, at around £3m, they are really getting top dollar for him.

You would expect that if Boyd goes you'd be looking at more in the region of £4m or £5m.

Then you can bring someone else in and still have a little bit of profit left over.

But at £3m there won't be much left once you take Kilmarnock's sell-on clause fee in to account.

I just think it's not good business for Rangers.

If they sell Kris Boyd and get one of the other strikers on the books to come in and do the business, and they win the championship, then there are no questions to be asked.

There's no doubt this is a massive gamble by Sir David Murray and Walter Smith.

Only time will tell but I just don't think this will do Rangers' title hopes any good whatsoever.
