No upsets in Le Riche first round

Le Riche Cup

There were no big upsets in the first round of Jersey football's Le Riche Cup on Saturday.

Cup holders Jersey Scottish cruised past First Tower United 3-0 at Les Quennevais with goals from Anthony McGovern, Paul Aitkin and Tom Carolan.

League champions St Paul's, who lost last year's final, won 3-1 at 2007 cup winners St Peter.

Jean-Paul Martyn got two for St Paul's and Nathan Taylor got the third while Chris Conning got the home side's goal.

League leaders Trinity showed that there is a big gap between the top of the Premiership and the top of the Championship as they beat the runaway leaders of the second tier Portuguese Club 5-2.

But Portuguese were the architects of their own downfall, scoring three own goals, as well as two goals from Trinity's island striker Barry Beatson. Helio de Freitas and Antonio Antunes got goals in the right end for Portuguese.

Groville got the better of Championship side St Brelade at Le Boulivot as Alex Jeffries and Luc Le Miere were on target in their 2-0 win, while Jersey Wanderers also beat lower-league opposition, with a 7-1 win over Beeches.

Jay Reid hit four and Barry Keith got two for the Premiership side.

There was something of an upset at Le Couvent as Premiership bottom side Rozel Rovers beat third-from-bottom Sporting Academics 1-0. Veteran former island player Steve Coutanche got the only goal.

In the two all-Championship ties Magpies got the better of Jersey Nomads while St Martin Sporting Club Francais got their first win in any competition this season.

Pies won 3-1 after goals from Darren Quintal, Steve Cumming and Matt Pamplin, while Lee Richomme, Jason Harris were on target for St Martin/SCF in their 2-1 win.

The draw for the quarter-finals will be made later this year.
