Cornwall lose SWCC title decider
Tavistock striker Glyn Hobbs's first half hat-trick secured a 3-2 win for Devon in the South West Counties Championship decider in Liskeard.
Hobbs opened the scoring after three minutes, but Cornwall were level three minutes later through Steve Ovens.
Hobbs then scored twice more before the break in a game affected by a severe thunderstorm before Bodmin's Nick Campbell got one back before the end.
It may be the last ever SWCC game as the Navy and RAF have pulled out.
2007-08 SWCC FINAL TABLE:
- ......................Pl W D L Pts
- Devon----------- 3 2 0 1 6
- Royal Navy----- 3 1 2 0 5
- Cornwall-------- 3 1 2 0 4
- RAF-------------- 3 0 1 2 1
The tournament has dropped to four teams from having as many as eight sides just a few years ago when counties such as Jersey, Dorset, Wiltshire, Guernsey and Sussex all played.
But the event has lost its attraction in recent years and one by one counties have dropped out.
Following the Navy and RAF's decision to drop out after this season, only Devon and Cornwall are left making the tournament no longer feasible.
It means it may well be the final county match for both south west counties for some time.
There was a special presentation after the match to the retiring team management from Cornwall of Ray Nicholls, Trevor Mewton, Terry Huddy, Martine Ede and Morrish Truscott.
