Concerned Galaxy to rest Beckham

David Beckham Los Angeles Galaxy are to rest David Beckham for Sunday's clash with Colorado Rapids amid workload concerns.

Beckham, played against Chivas on Thursday, the day after taking part in England's defeat to Germany at Wembley.

He was seen grimacing in pain for much of the 3-0 loss and left the field limping with pain in his ankle.

"While it's regrettable that he will not play, we have to focus on healing David's injury," said Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas.

"He will rest this weekend in LA while preparing for our SuperLiga final match on Wednesday."

Beckham, who was on the receiving end of a high tackle by Chivas' Jesse Marsch in Thursday's game, has been nursing an ankle injury since moving to LA last month.

"I'm really disappointed to not be able to play my first match in Colorado," Beckham said.

"Our training staff has advised me that it would be detrimental to not only my health for this game but for the rest of the season as well."

Speaking to BBC Sport recently, Lalas warned Beckham may have to miss some future England friendlies to ensure his fitness.

Beckham, 32, faces at least 22 games, almost 80,000 air miles - across 128 time zones - and nearly a week in the air over the next three months.
