Beckham to miss FC Dallas fixture

David Beckham David Beckham will not travel with LA Galaxy for Tuesday's SuperLiga game at FC Dallas because of his long-standing ankle problem, BBC Sport has learned.

The 32-year-old England midfielder has not played or trained since this month's debut against Chelsea.

"He won't be playing in the game against FC Dallas," club spokesman Patrick Donnelly told BBC Sport.

"We will check to see later in the week if he is fit to play in Sunday's MLS game against Toronto FC."

LA Galaxy coach Frak Yallop added: "The swelling's not bad. It's just the soreness from the scar tissue, to be honest, that's in there right now and they're just working it out.

"And it's just there's a lot to work out and they're just getting through and getting the ankle more stable.

"Just having David there is good for morale"
Head coach Frank Yallop

Galaxy must beat Dallas in their final group game in the eight-team tournament if they are to progress to the knockout stage of the competition between Major League Soccer and Mexican clubs.

However, with his side set to return to the league campaign in Toronto, Yallop will not risk taking Beckham on a seven-hour round trip to Texas.

Although Beckham was one of seven substitutes for Saturday's SuperLiga match against Chivas at the Los Angeles Coliseum, Yallop never considered sending him on to the pitch.

"He wanted to be on the bench and be involved in the locker room and it's obviously good to have him around," added Yallop. "Just having him there is good for morale.

"Plus, this is a good learning experience to get him used to the players, when they get ready for matches, how they react and all that sort of thing."

  • Meanwhile, Brazilian legend Pele has urged Beckham he must focus solely on his football if he is to be a success in America.

    " "

Pele famously played for New York Cosmos in the 1970s and he says Beckham must ignore the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

"David Beckham is more of a pop star than a player," said Pele.

"From my experience with New York Cosmos, I would advise him to be very well prepared for the matches.

"I know the level of play in the league. It is well balanced and the spectators will demand a lot from him as their star player.

"But when there's no training or practice, then he can stroll through Hollywood."
