Wembley will host play-off games

Wembley Stadium The Football League has announced that the end-of-season play-offs will be held at the new Wembley Stadium.

The announcement follows Brent council granting Wembley a safety certificate on Tuesday after two successful warm-up events at the £798m stadium.

"This is the news which fans of League clubs have been waiting for," said League chairman Lord Mawhinney.

The League Two play-off final will take place on Saturday 26 May, with League One and the Championship following.

Lord Mawhinney added: "Knowing their club could get to play at the new Wembley is sure to provide an extra edge to what is already shaping up to be a very exciting end-of-season run-in."

Wembley managing director Alex Horne added: "We are looking forward to welcoming back the Football League play-offs at the end of May.

"As the final hurdle in the season-long race for promotion these are exciting and critical matches and we are delighted that they will be returning to Wembley this year."

Cardiff's Millennium Stadium had been put on standby for the three matches.
