The 606 message boards have been deluged with fans discussing the appointment of Steve McClaren as the new coach of the England team.
The Middlesbrough manager, who is currently Sven-Goran Eriksson's assistant with England, will take over the reigns on 1 August after signing a four-year deal.
McClaren's appointment has been well received by the media, but there seems to be an undercurrent of dissatisfaction from the regular England fan.
The 606 message board users have been voicing their opinion on the matter and the majority are less than keen on the FA's decision to turn to McClaren after failing to land Luiz Felipe Scolari.
I'm absolutely disgusted by the appointment, I couldn't imagine a worse person for the job. His team play completely uninspiring football and he appears tactically inept, as demonstrated by the drubbings inflicted on Middlesbrough this season. All this in addition to a complete charisma deficit. He makes Sven look positively colourful.

I'm willing to bet with anyone at any odds that McClaren will not lead England into the 2010 World Cup. For all who say "give him a chance", well, he's got it now. Let's see just how long he lasts.

Is this the same Steve McClaren that Middlesbrough fans wanted out only a few months ago? I'm sorry but all the man has done is get a very good result against Roma and scraped past teams such as Steaua Bucharest conceding three or four goals in the process!
Boro are still about 15th in the league. This is a blind appointment from the FA. They should have gone for someone like Allardyce who has a bit of passion and will drop the big names.

How typical of the FA to appoint the one person the vast majority of England fans specifically said they didn't want as manager. Surely Martin O'Neill would be a better choice!

Not very exciting, is it? An uninspired choice that adds nothing to the current set-up, and basically means more of the same. Politically he managed to get close to the job, so there's the choice. I heard it and just thought, how boring.

You would think the FA would have appointed a manager with similar credentials to Sven to replace him, but no, they decided to replace him with an assistant. A man who supposedly deserves respect just because the team he put together with millions of pounds won a Mickey Mouse cup in England.
Also by some miracle he managed with this average team to get to the final of the Uefa "Cup for average clubs in Europe". How can England have a manager in charge whose club side was beaten 7-0 in their domestic league? It's beyond me! It just seems to me England are going backwards! I can't be the only one who sees this can I?

FA members panicked when Scolari refused them and thought they would win the fans by choosing an Englishman. I expect the majority of fans would have accepted it if the FA took longer to appoint a new manager and made a decision that would have been more widely accepted.

An absolute joke decision. Four more years of the same tired over-rated players being wheeled out onto the pitch. The FA have gone for another yes man instead of guy who'll shake things up. It's another 'don't give Clough the job' decision. Allardyce was the man the fans wanted - McClaren wasn't even in the top three in any of the polls! What a farce!

Is this the best England can possibly do? Of the thousands of managers available with passion, drive and some (like O'Neill) incredible natural ability and astuteness, was McClaren the best of all of them? What do the FA see in McClaren? Courage, vigour, an uncompromising desire to win? I don't think that they do.
