Taylor ton seals England victory

Women's one-day international: England 253-3 (48/48 overs) beat India 153-7 (48/48 overs) by 100 runs

Claire Taylor celebrates her century Veteran Claire Taylor hit 156, the third-highest score ever in a women's one-day international as England beat India by 100 runs in the series opener.

Laura Newton (51) shared a stand of 123 for the second wicket with Taylor to help England to 253-3 the first women's game at Lord's for five years.

In a match reduced to 48 overs per side, Taylor was dropped on 13 and 19 on her way to her fourth ODI ton.

India were held to 153-7 in reply, despite 59 from captain Mithali Raj.

Beth Morgan took 3-39 and Katherine Brunt proved her recovery from back trouble with two wickets.

England coach Richard Bates sprang a surprise before the start when he named 17-year-old Sarah Taylor as wicket-keeper instead of veteran Jane Smit.

Only captain Charlotte Edwards has made a higher score for England than Taylor's mark.

Former Aussie skipper Belinda Clark's 229 not out against Denmark in 1997 remains the highest by a woman or man in a limited-overs match.
