Henry Blofeld

Henry Blofeld As a brilliant schoolboy wicket-keeper and batsman, Henry was, in the opinion of several good judges, destined to play for England.

His dreams of Test cricket were ended in his final year at Eton when he was involved in a collision with a bus whilst riding his bicycle.

But it did not prevent him subsequently playing for Cambridge University and Norfolk before entering the world of journalism and broadcasting.

He started as an assistant to E.W.Swanton and later wrote for the Guardian and the Independent.

He left TMS for a spell with Sky Television in the early 1990s, but his return in 1994 brought a storm of approval from listeners who missed his description of buses, planes and pigeons.

The award of an OBE in the 2003 New Year Honours List was a reward for one of broadcasting's most distinctive voices.
