Qadir to lead Pakistan selectors

Abdul Qadir

Former Pakistan spin bowler Abdul Qadir has been named as the new chairman of the national team selection panel.

His appointment comes just 24 hours after former team-mate Javed Miandad was announced as the new director general of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

"It's a big honour for me," said Qadir, who took 236 wickets in 67 Tests and also played 104 one-day internationals.

"The aim of the selectors should be to pick the best national side and also give exposure to new talent."

Qadir, 53, was the fifth former Pakistan player given senior positions since Ejaz Butt took over from Nasim Ashraf as PCB chairman last month.

As well as Miandad, Salim Altaf is now the PCB's chief operating officer, Aamir Sohail is the director of the national academy and Wasim Bari, a former chief selector, has been given the job of director of human resources.

Former Test batsman Shoaib Mohammad and fast bowler Salim Jaffer will serve as selectors alongside Qadir.

And Butt has left them with no doubt as to the need for him to make an immediate impact in their new roles.

"Our primary target for the first year is that Pakistan climb into the top three rankings in any two forms of the sport; Test, one-day internationals or Twenty20 cricket," said Butt.

Pakistan are currently fourth in the one-day rankings and sixth in Test matches.
