Razzak banned for illegal action

Abdur Razzak

Bangladesh spinner Abdur Razzak has been suspended from cricket over his illegal bowling action.

Umpires Daryl Harper and Asoka de Silva reported him to the International Cricket Council (ICC) after the second Test against New Zealand last month.

ICC rules insist bowlers release the ball with a straight arm, although it allows a certain amount of leeway.

The 26-year-old, who has 14 days to appeal against the ban, will remain suspended until he remodels his action.

"Elbow extension in Razzak's bowling action exceeded the 15 degree level of tolerance," read an ICC statement.

"The suspension applies with immediate effect.

"He can apply for reassessment of his bowling action after he has modified it in accordance with clause G of the regulations for the review of bowlers reported with suspected illegal bowling actions."

It is the second time Razzak's action have been queried, with his bowling also being reported during a one-day match in the 2004 Asia Cup in Colombo.

The left-armer has played five Tests for Bangladesh, having made his debut against Australia in 2006, but is a regular member of the one-day side.
