The Tigers were reduced to 86-5 at lunch, and Martin picked up three more wickets in the afternoon session to seal his eighth five-wicket Test haul.
New Zealand lost Matthew Bell in the second over but Craig Cumming shared 83 in 26 overs with Stephen Fleming.
