ECB announces grassroots funding

David Collier

The England and Wales Cricket Board has been awarded £37.8m of funding over four years by Sport England to help develop the sport.

The ECB aims to increase the numbers playing cricket and the quality of facilities at all levels as well as investing in elite young talent.

It will also continue to focus on improving opportunities for women, girls and disabled players.

The grant is the largest awarded by Sport England to any governing body.

"This agreement is fantastic news for cricket and will enable us to continue our work to increase opportunities for people to take part in our sport," said ECB chief executive David Collier.

The funding plan runs from 2009 to 2013 with a portion already dedicated to the Cricket Foundation's Chance to Shine programme which aims to bring cricket back to a third of state schools by 2015.

The ECB said it would also work with Sport England to secure further funding for projects that build social inclusion and improve public health.

"Sport England has worked hard to ensure that our half a billion pound investment in grassroots sport delivers value for money, and most importantly, results," said Sport England chief executive Jennie Price.
