England selector drops Read hint

Chris Read

Nottinghamshire wicket-keeper Chris Read could still have a future with the England team, according to national selector Geoff Miller.

Read has not played for his country since the Ashes series in January 2007.

The 29-year-old is widely regarded as the best keeper in the country, and is averaging over 70 with the bat for Championship leaders Notts this year.

Miller told BBC Radio Nottingham: "The Notts public might have to watch this space. We will keep our options open."

Miller confirmed that Read's inclusion was discussed at a six-hour selection meeting ahead of England's first Test against New Zealand.

"I think Mustard is the way forward - give him two years in the Test side and I really think he can prove himself"

"Yes, he was discussed, and he will continue to be discussed.

"Chris knows we're around the grounds all the time, and will keep in touch with how we're feeling.

"From his point of view, it's a matter of consistently putting in the performances."

Since Read was dropped after the Ashes tour, England have named Matt Prior, Phil Mustard and Tim Ambrose as wicket-keeper, but none of them has been able yet to secure a place in the side.
