Giles named new Warwickshire boss

Ashley Giles returns to Warwickshire as director of cricket Former England spinner Ashley Giles has returned to Warwickshire as director of cricket just a month after being forced to retire from playing.

Giles, 34, who retired with a chronic hip problem, got the nod over former Bears captain Dermot Reeve.

Previous incumbent Mark Greatbatch left after Warwickshire's double relegation in the Championship and Pro40 League.

"This is an unexpected but fantastic opportunity for me and I am honoured to have been approached," said Giles.

"We need to make an honest and thorough assessment of where we are, and then put in place a long-term plan to deliver a successful future."

Giles joined Warwickshire in 1992 and took a total of 539 first-class wickets in his career. He returns to Edgbaston on a 12-month rolling contract.

Warwickshire chief executive Colin Povey said of Giles: "His knowledge of both the club and what it takes to perform at the highest levels make him an ideal candidate.

"His first task will be to assess our current cricket structures and personnel. During the off-season we expect to have to make some further changes."

After making his Test debut against South Africa in 1998, Giles played in 54 Tests, and took 143 wickets at an average of 40.60.

He played a pivotal role in England's regaining of the Ashes in 2005 and was later named as one of Wisden's five Cricketers of the Year.

Giles' last appearance for Warwickshire came in the 2005 C&G Trophy final against Hampshire at Lord's.
