Batsman Brown released by Surrey

Alistair Brown

Veteran Surrey batsman Ali Brown will be released at the end of this season after 16 years with the county.

The 38-year-old former England one-day player has hit 44 hundreds and made almost 15,000 runs during his career.

Cricket manager Alan Butcher told BBC London 94.9: "At some stage you had to accept the match-winning innings are getting fewer as the season goes on.

"We felt we had to move forward, find out what we had in the youth set-up and give opportunities to younger players."

Brown's attacking style made him the cornerstone of Surrey's limited overs side, and one of his greatest achievements was the 268 he hit against Glamorgan at The Oval in the C&G Trophy in 2002 which remains a one-day world record.

And although Surrey are waving him goodbye in the hope of moving forward with their younger players, Butcher suspects Brown might still have at least another season in him.

"I half expected someone to come in and maybe take him on loan towards the end of the season," he said.

"I am pretty sure he wants to continue his career, and I am sure that someone will give him that opportunity. "
