Surrey look for Kumble to shine

Anil Kumble Surrey coach Alan Butcher expects Anil Kumble to play a key role in the second half of the season as the club push for a return to Championship Division One.

India's leading wicket-taker of all time arrives at The Oval on Monday.

"Anil is a world-class spinner with a great deal of international and first class experience," said Butcher.

"His ability, character and professionalism will be a great addition to the dressing room, as we push for promotion into Division One."

Kumble took 23 wickets to play an instrumental role in India's 1-0 Test series victory over the West Indies, the first on Caribbean soil since 1971.

He then returned home to spend some time with his wife and new born baby.

The 110-Test veteran will take his place in the Surrey side for the match against Somerset at Guildford, starting on Wednesday.

His availability could be restricted if he is called up for India's one-day series in Sri Lanka and South Africa next month.

But he has not played in India's last six one-day series, raising hopes he will stay in south London until September.

Kumble is one of only two bowlers ever to take all ten wickets of a Test match innings, with 10-74 against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999.

The other player to achieve this feat was Surrey and England player Jim Laker in 1956.
