Facing the ignominy of second division cricket, it is time for some of the younger players to come of age.

Opening batsman Scott Newman and seamer Tim Murtagh need to turn promise into match winning performances.

Anil Kumble could be a catalyst, joining veterans Mark Ramprakash, Martin Bicknell and Alistair Brown.

Coach and captain will have a Butcher's hook at promotion in the Championship and Pro40 while targeting further success in the Twenty20 Cup.

Surrey face Derbyshire and Leicestershire for their first two matches in an emphatic welcome to County Championship Division Two.

But do not expect them to remain there as the injury crises and dressing-room strife of last year ease.

Skipper Mark Butcher and seamer Martin Bicknell will lead a group of talented youngsters by example.

Anil Kumble has taken bucket loads of county wickets in the past and Azhar Mahmood's return to fitness will help.
