Kieswetter committed to England

Craig Kieswetter

Somerset wicketkeeper-batsman Craig Kieswetter has no intention of playing for South Africa despite reported interest from captain Graeme Smith.

The 21-year-old, born in Johannesburg to a Scottish mother, represented South Africa against England at the ICC Under-19 World Cup in February 2006.

But, although he does not qualify to play until February 2010, Kieswetter has already pledged himself to England.

He said: "I remain committed to playing international cricket for England."

Kieswetter added: "It is very flattering to hear someone of Graeme Smith's stature speak so highly of me."

Smith had been quoted in a national newspaper saying that South Africa have been watching Kieswetter for some time and wanted him back.

" He is, possibly, the most exciting talent to emerge for a number of years "

But, having rapidly taken notice of his glove-work and attacking style of batting since his Somerset debut in 2007, the England hierarchy have now called him into their winter development squad.

Kieswetter has already joined up with the England Performance squad, who are due to arrive in South Africa on 16 November.

Somerset director of cricket Brian Rose said: "He's a very exciting prospect.

"Everyone at Taunton, from the players to the members and the supporters, will be delighted that he remains committed to helping Somerset achieve further success and hopefully going on to play for England."
