Stander earns first Scotland call

Jan Stander

South African-born Jan Stander has been named in Scotland's 25-man training squad for next year's World Cup qualifying tournament.

The Stoneywood Dyce all-rounder is now eligible, having completed his four-year residency qualification.

Stander is the only uncapped player selected and head coach Peter Steindl said: "We aim to keep our options open.

"We can choose a team to suit the conditions when the location of the World Cup qualifier is revealed."

The date and venue for the 2011 qualifying tournament is expected to be confirmed within the next couple of weeks, though it is thought it will be held in April.

"The squad is currently enjoying a well-deserved break, but we will reconvene early next month to start our preparations for the qualifier - and next summer's busy programme, including the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 in England," added Steindl.

Scotland squad: John Blain, Richard Berrington, Kyle Coetzer, Gordon Drummond, Gordon Goudie, Gavin Hamilton, Majid Haq, Omer Hussain, Moneeb Iqbal, Douglas Lockhart, Ross Lyons, Gregor Maiden, Neil McCallum, Calum MacLeod, Dewald Nel, Navdeep Poonia, Glenn Rogers, Qasim Sheikh, Colin Smith, Simon Smith, Jan Stander, Ryan Watson, Fraser Watts, Sean Weeraratna, Craig Wright.
