Leicestershire put Boon in charge

Tim Boon Leicestershire have named their former batsman Tim Boon as senior coach.

The 44-year-old has a three-year deal to fill a role created after the post of director of cricket was scrapped and James Whitaker left last month.

Boon, who scored more than 11,000 runs in 15 years for the Foxes, had been England's video analyst after coaching their Under-19 and Under-17 teams.

"Tim has outstanding credentials, having worked with some of the biggest names," chairman Neil Davidson said.

"We wanted a senior coach with a more hands-on approach to get the best out of our players, with a strong focus on developing young talent, and we feel he is the right man for that job."

The Yorkshireman helped England coach Duncan Fletcher prepare for the Ashes triumph, analysing footage of the home and touring teams.

"Tim has been a very valuable member of the management team and I will be sorry to see him leave"

He was so successful that he was asked to perform a similar role in the World XI's Super Series against Australia in October.

Boon said: "My intention had been to stay with England until after the 2007 World Cup.

"I discussed my future plans closely with Duncan Fletcher and the ECB in 2004, at which time I gained their agreement to pursue a head coach role.

"The situation at Leicestershire provides me with the opportunities I am looking for. I was impressed with the chairman's vision for the club."

Fletcher added: "Tim has been a very valuable member of the management team. I will be sorry to see him leave but am pleased he has landed an exciting coaching opportunity."
