DeFreitas fury at Leics treatment

Phil DeFreitas Ex-England all-rounder Phil DeFreitas has hit out at Leicestershire after retiring at the end of the season.

He told BBC Radio Leicester: "I'm so disappointed about the treatment I've received for taking over the captaincy in 2003 at such a terrible stage.

"They had to give it to someone with experience and help put it back together. I felt I'd done that last year but my treatment was terrible.

"There's been a lot of things happening which I'm confused about."

He added: "I simply can't understand what's been going on. I've basically kept quiet for two years because when you're playing cricket, you stay out of the politics. I've now retired, I've finished and am walking away from Leicestershire. "

DeFreitas left the captaincy midway through last season and only played four Championship games this season before appearing for the second XI.

He began his career with Leicestershire in 1985 and returned in 2000 after spells with Lancashire and Derbyshire.

He was part of England's 1986-87 Ashes-winning side and played in the 1987 and 1992 World Cup finals while he took 140 wickets at 33.57 for England in 44 Tests.

He also played 103 one-day internationals, claiming 115 wickets in the process.
