Lancs plan Old Trafford upgrade

Old Trafford

Lancashire have submitted plans for the redevelopment of their Old Trafford ground in a bid to stage an Ashes Test on Australia's next tour in 2013.

Old Trafford was not awarded a Test match during this summer's series.

"The significant investment will ensure Old Trafford regains its place on the Test match circuit," said Lancashire chief executive Jim Cumbes.

Under the plans, two new stands would be built and improvements would be made to the pavilion and player facilities.

The stands would ensure a capacity of 15,000, which could rise by another 10,000 with temporary seating.

This work would take place in the second phase of the development with the first phase, which has already started, seeing a new conference and events suite built by the middle of next year.

The development would also boost the surrounding area with a huge supermarket planned, generating 500 jobs, and a total investment of £70m into the Trafford area.

Cumbes added: "The club makes a huge contribution to the local and regional economy and is a critical part of the region's international sporting infrastructure."

Old Trafford came in for criticism over the summer after two Twenty20 internationals against Australia were abandoned.
