Chapple key for success - Austin

Ian Austin

Former Lancashire all-rounder Ian Austin believes Glen Chapple's appointment as captain at Old Trafford will turn the county's fortunes around.

The 34-year-old has replaced Stuart Law who has now left Old Trafford after just one season in the role.

"Glen played a big part in the club's glory days," the former England one-day man told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"But over the last couple of years he's struggled a bit, so he's seen both sides of it."

Austin, who starred alongside Yorkshire-born Chapple in the 1998 NatWest Trophy winning side, feels his experience will be invaluable.

"They've got to finals while he's been there and also got to the last hurdle and fallen," said Austin, "so I'd like to think he'll be in a position where he's not going to panic if things don't go for him.

"I think it might also make it easier for Glen now Dominic Cork and Stuart Law won't be there.

"There isn't that sort of presence there any more and hopefully he can go on and do his own thing.

"He's got people around him if he wants any advice, but he's got the nucleus of a young side that can stay together for a number of years."

Skipton-born Chapple came through the ranks at Old Trafford, making his first-class debut for Lancashire in 1992.
