Ireland to tour Jamaica in 2009

Phil Simmons

Ireland are set to tour Jamaica next year after reaching an agreement which will also see the Caribbean nation playing matches in the Emerald Isle.

Cricket Ireland and the Jamaica Cricket Association discussed the issued at the World Twenty20 qualifier in Belfast.

The Ireland women's and underage teams could also be involved in matches against their Jamaican counterparts.

Ireland coach Phil Simmons said the tour late next year would be "a wonderful opportunity" for his players.

The tour will see the Ireland squad returning to the country where they produced their sensational World Cup exploits last year.

The Irish defeated Pakistan at Sabina Park in Kingston to qualify for the Super Eights stage in the Caribbean.

"They can only become better players for the experience, and I know how much they will enjoy returning to the scene of their marvellous exploits last year," said Simmons.
