Glamorgan recruit paceman Kruger

Garnett Kruger

Glamorgan have signed South African right-arm fast bowler Garnett Kruger for the 2009 season.

The 31-year-old, who played three one-day internationals against Australia in 2005/06, has been a Kolpak player at Leicestershire for the last two years.

"I can't wait to join Glamorgan, I just want to play cricket and be as successful as possible," said Kruger.

Glamorgan manager Matthew Maynard also wants a batsman, with Australian Mark Cosgrove seen as the favourite.

The "Kolpak" term comes from the Slovakian handball player Maros Kolpak, who won a ruling in the European Court of Justice in 2004 allowing him to play professionally in Germany without being classed as a foreigner.

The term has been given to cricketers from South Africa and the West Indies, who are able to come into the UK and play county cricket without being classed as overseas players.

Kruger will join international team-mate Herschelle Gibbs at the Swalec Stadium next summer.

The former played for South Africa A between 2000 and 2005 and has a wealth of experience in domestic cricket in South Africa, with a career tally of over 300 first-class wickets plus over 150 wickets in List A games.

"I am absolutely delighted that Kruger is joining the side," said Maynard.

"He is a player of great experience and he will lead our bowling attack next season.

"With the additions of Kruger and Gibbs to the side, we look forward to a very exciting season."

Chairman Paul Russell added: "Kruger is a fine addition to the side.

"The 2009 season is an exciting time for Glamorgan and we eagerly await what promises to be an extremely exciting year for the club."
