Glamorgan announce Cresselly game

Cresselly Cricket Club pavilion Glamorgan will play Surrey in Pembrokeshire next May, as they take to the road due to ground redevelopment work at Sophia Gardens.

Cresselly Cricket Club will host a one day ECB Trophy match with Surrey on the Whitsun Bank Holiday, Monday, 28 May.

"We are delighted to be able to fly the flag for cricket in Wales," said Glamorgan chief executive Mike Fatkin.

"Cresselly has held benefit matches. It is Dan Cherry's club and we hope more Pembrokeshire players will follow."

Swansea and Colwyn Bay should secure more Glamorgan fixtures next season when the county finalise their plans, an ECB Trophy one-dayer with Gloucestershire at Colwyn confirmed for 10 June.

One-day matches will also be held in Ebbw Vale, while Abergavenny will see Championship cricket for the first time in a decade.

The Welsh county are likely to play only Twenty20 matches at their Cardiff Sophia Gardens home before mid-August.

Glamorgan's first game of 2007 will be against Oxford UCCE at The Parks on 18 April.

They travel to Taunton for a Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy fixture with Somerset on 22 April, and open their Championship campaign against Essex at Chelmsford on 25 April.

Their first home game is a Championship match with Nottinghamshire on 2 May.

Cresselly, situated north-west of Tenby and Saundersfoot, has hosted two Glamorgan benefit matches in recent years.

"Cresselly is delighted and honoured to host this prestigious fixture," said Cresselly chairman Glyn Cole.

"For the first time on a Pembrokeshire ground the cricketing community can view professionals from two first-class counties playing against each other in a competitive contest.

"This game is a huge boost to cricket in Pembrokeshire and we look forward with eager anticipation to welcoming Glamorgan and Surrey to our ground."

Glamorgan have played annual friendlies against Pembrokeshire in the county since the 1940s, and in 1991 Cresselly staged the one-day match.
