Harmison hails Durham team effort

Steve Harmison

Durham bowler Steve Harmison has hailed a terrific team spirit as the catalyst for their first-ever Division One County Championship title win.

Harmison, 29, enjoyed a terrific personal season, taking 60 Championship wickets, but believes the credit for their success belongs to the team.

"It's been a fantastic achievement for the club," he told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"We've done our job. We had to win the game to win the Championship, and we did. It's been a whole team effort."

Durham beat Kent on the final day of their County Championship game on Saturday to win the title for the first time in their 16-year history as a first-class side.

For Harmison, the success comes a year after the fast-bowler missed Durham's first-ever trophy win - the 2007 Friends Provident Trophy defeat of Hampshire at Lord's.

And the England man is adamant that the prestige of winning the Championship outweighs any domestic success he has achieved thus far in his 12-season career.

"I was probably the most happy/unhappy man in Durham last year because I didn't play but we still won the trophy," he said.

"Winning the Friends Provident, you win half a dozen games to get to the final at Lord's, but this is a culmination of a whole season, six months of hard slog.

"I made my debut in 1996 and I've had more bad times than good times but I'm chuffed to bits that the whole club has been propelled to the County Championship."
