Derbyshire close in on Langeveldt

Charl Langeveldt

Derbyshire have completed the signing of promising South African batsmen Dominic Telo and are close to a deal for bowler Charl Langeveldt.

Telo is a highly-rated 22-year-old who was thought to be close to international recognition with the Proteas after a superb 2007/08 season.

He has signed a two-year contract at the County Ground.

And BBC Sport understands a deal for 33-year-old Langeveldt will be completed later in the week.

Head of cricket John Morris was thrilled to have captured Telo.

"Dominic Telo has signed with the intention of qualifying so that he can eventually play as an English cricketer"

"Dominic is one of the brightest young batsmen in the South African game," said Morris. "And we are naturally delighted to have tempted him to Derbyshire.

"It is important to note that Dominic has signed with the intention of qualifying so that he can eventually play as an English cricketer. At such a young age, time is certainly on his side."

Telo joins on the back of a fine season in South Africa during which he scored 648 runs in eight matches, at an average of 58.90.

He helped Western Province to the final of the Provincial Three Day Challenge in his homeland, making his highest first-class score of 134 not out against Boland in November - a game which saw him notch centuries in both innings.

Chairman Don Amott added: "The most exciting aspect of this signing is the fact that we have managed to tempt a young cricketer, with his best years very much ahead of him.

"We are thrilled that Dominic decided that Derbyshire is where he wants to be and I wish him lots of luck for his time with the club."
