Michael Vaughan failed with the bat, making just 10 in his first match since giving up his role as England captain.
Looking for runs to show he warrants a place in England's future Test teams, Vaughan could only score 10 at Scarborough for Yorkshire against Kent.
He came to the crease immediately after tea as Yorkshire replied to Kent's first-innings score of 227.
After facing 19 deliveries, Vaughan chased a ball outside off stump and nicked off to the wicketkeeper.
Geraint Jones held on to the thick edge off up-and-coming seamer Robbie Joseph after Vaughan had hit two boundaries behind square.
Yorkshire eventually closed on 85-2 to hold an early advantage at North Marine Road.
Despite his failure, Vaughan was upbeat about his cricket in general.
"If I can play some really long innings for Yorkshire it will also make a difference to the team"
He said: "There have been stages this summer where I've hit some good shots, but I haven't played that really long innings.
"That's what I am looking to do over the next few weeks and if I can play some really long innings for Yorkshire it will also make a difference to the team."
Vaughan said he had received hundreds of sympathetic letters, cards and e-mails since resigning the England captaincy and he wanted to express his appreciation to everyone who had been in touch with him.
The Kent innings had been a bizarre affair, in which Martin van Jaarsveld hit a faultless 107 off just 139 deliveries with 15 fours and two sixes, and Joe Denly made 50 at the top of the order.
But no other Kent batsman reached double figures as Yorkshire's strong seam attack shared the wickets.
