Surrey win despite Trott innings

NatWest Pro40 D2, Edgbaston:
Surrey 238-5 bt Warwickshire 217 by 21 runsMatch scorecard

Surrey kept alive their promotion hopes in the Pro40, despite a bold challenge by Warwickshire opener Jonathan Trott in an enthralling match at Edgbaston.

James Benning got the visitors' innings off to a fine start with 74 off 79 balls, and Mark Ramprakash's late 54no helped Surrey to a fine total of 238-5.

However, the hosts were always in it with Trott looking good at the crease.

But when he fell to Jade Dernbach (4-31) for 92, the Bears' challenge ended and they slumped to 217 all out.

It was a tremendous spell from Dernbach that turned the tide firmly in Surrey's favour, the seamer taking four wickets in 16 balls to end Warwickshire's resistance.

Left-arm spinner Usman Afzaal also contributed with 3-42, with Jim Troughton the only home batsman able to provide any support to Trott.

The defeat is a dent to Warwickshire's own promotion hopes, with just four points from five games this season.
