Derbyshire suffered a dramatic collapse on the first day of their LV County Championship Division Two match as they were bowled out for 244 at Lord's.
But Derbyshire hit back with the quick wicket of Billy Godleman and Middlesex will resume day two on 10-1.
Derbyshire looked in control on 217-5, but four wickets in 17 balls gave Middlesex the upper hand.
Chris Rogers (67) and Dan Birch (72) were the pick of the Derbyshire batsman before their late collapse.
Having been put in, Derbyshire wasted no time in forging an 87-run first-wicket partnership before Steve Stubbings was caught behind on 26 from Dirk Nannes.
And that was about as much excitement as the crowd got in the first session, as Derbyshire were 104-1 at lunch
But with just the fifth ball after lunch, Middlesex broke through with the wicket of Rogers who had helped a Vernon Philander delivery onto his stumps.
And it was the wicket of Birch in the 79th over that really opened the floodgates.
A last-wicket stand of 23 runs was not enough to undo the damage, as Nannes removed Kevin Dean's leg stump to finish off the visitors, three overs after taking the new ball.
In reply, Middlesex's hopes of surviving the remaining five overs without all 10 wickets in tact were dashed when Godleman was trapped lbw by Kevin Dean, with just one run to his name.
