Di Venuto reaches 1,000 run mark
County Championship Div One, Riverside: Durham 232 & 73-0 v Surrey 183 (day two)
Durham's Michael di Venuto passing 1,000 County Championship runs for the season was one of the highlights of a shortened second day at the Riverside.
The opener reached the mark as he made 44 not out in his side's second innings 73-0, a lead of 122, before rain ended the day's play at the lunch interval.
Resuming on 161-7 after a heavy shower, Surrey were all out for 183 as Liam Plunkett struck twice in two balls.
He found Matt Nicholson's edge and then uprooted Jimmy Ormond's middle stump.
Harbhajan Singh kept out an attempted yorker to deny the hat-trick but later edged Ottis Gibson to leave the visitors with a first innings deficit of 49.
Surrey may have been relieved to see the rain return as their inexperienced seam attack was milked by Di Venuto and Mark Stoneman (26 not out) before lunch.
