Super Gibson grabs 10-wicket haul

LV County Championship D1, Riverside, day three (close): Durham 252 v Hampshire 115

Ottis Gibson

Ottis Gibson became the first bowler to take all 10 wickets in a Championship innings for 13 years as Durham skittled Hampshire at the Riverside.

The 38-year-old took 10-47 in three continuous spells either side of lunch and after a rain interruption.

It was the first time the feat had been achieved in the Championship since Richard Johnson did so in 1994.

Hampshire were all out for 115 and Mark Stoneman made 50 as Durham reached 114-2 at stumps to lead by 251.

Gibson's performance continued a remarkable comeback which began with Leicestershire, who he joined in 2004 after three years working solely as a coach.

A former West Indies Test player, he made his Durham debut last summer, taking 49 wickets and scoring almost 600 runs as they narrowly avoided relegation to Division Two.

And prior to the start of the game against Hampshire, he had taken 23 Championship wickets this season as well 19 in the FP Trophy to help set up Durham's first appearance in a Lord's final - against the same opponents on 18 August.

Both sides were eager to make up lost time after Saturday's play was washed out, but Durham only managed to add five runs for their final three wickets after resuming on 245-7 as David Griffiths made short work of the tail.

Captain Dale Benkenstein was last man out, bowled for 114 by Griffiths, who finished with figures of 4-46.

But Hampshire were soon in disarray as Gibson picked up five wickets before lunch and continued his one-man demolition job after the re-start.

"I've been around long enough to know that next week I might not take any wickets, so I still won't look much further than tomorrow," he said.

"I wasn't going to bowl after lunch, but the captain said I wasn't going to get many more chances to take all 10 at my age.

"It couldn't have worked out better for me because both times I started I feel tired I got a break, first for lunch, then with the rain."

Opener Michael Brown carried his bat for 56, but Michael Lumb (16) was the only other player to reach double figures in a woeful batting effort by the visitors.

They were in dire need of something special from their bowlers, but their seamers went wicket-less as Will Smith and Stoneman put on 96 for the first wicket.

And it was the introduction of spin which finally did the trick as Shane Warne had Smith stumped by Nic Pothas for 48 and Shaun Udal had Stoneman leg-before after reaching his maiden first-class half century, which included eight fours.
