Captain Butcher is key for Surrey

Cresselly: Friends Provident Trophy (South): Surrey 206-7 (37 overs) bt Glamorgan 203-8 (39 overs) by three wickets

Captain Mark Butcher steered Surrey to victory over Glamorgan and top of the Friends Provident Trophy South section.

The former England batsman finished unbeaten on 72 as his side reached their target of 204 for the loss of seven wickets with two overs to spare.

They were in a bit of trouble at 185-7, having lost three wickets for seven runs as Alex Wharf took 4-45.

Earlier, Jimmy Maher (76) was the mainstay in Glamorgan's 203-8 in a match cut to 39 overs each by rain.

Only 1.4 overs were possible before a delay of nearly two hours, and when Glamorgan resumed they were soon in trouble against the seam movement.

Maher, who could have been run out with the score on 87-4, reached his half century in 70 balls and was eventually bowled by a slower Rikki Clarke delivery.

Mark Wallace and Dean Cosker scored 43 in five overs to get Glamorgan past 200 and they would have fancied their chances when Surrey also struggled at the start to limp to 62-3.

Butcher began the rebuilding job with Jon Batty as they put on 81 for the fourth wicket but when Batty was bowled Surrey lost four wickets in the space of six overs before the skipper guided them home.
