Hants take control against Surrey

County Championship D1, The Oval, day three (close): Hampshire 481-9 dec & 224-1 dec v Surrey 203 & 105-2

Shane Warne took 5-45 and Michael Brown fired an unbeaten century as Hampshire assumed total control at The Oval.

Mark Ramprakash (108) completed another fine unbeaten ton for Surrey but only Mark Butcher (50) supported him as Warne ran through them for 203 all out.

Brown (115) and John Crawley (66no) then combined to put Hampshire 502 runs ahead before they declared on 224-1.

And Surrey lost Shaun Newman and, more importantly Ramprakash, before closing on 105-2 - still 398 runs behind.

But it was the hosts' first-innings collapse that really put them under pressure as their miserable start to the season continued.

Despite Ramprakash's superb century, the last eight wickets for just 76 runs as Warne put them to the sword in fine style.

Brown and Crawley then showed them how it should be done, and when Ian Salisbury had Ramprakash stumped down the leg side late in the day, Surrey's hopes were all but ended.
