Goddard earns plaudits for Derbys
County Championship D2, Derby, day one (close): Derbyshire 273-6 v Surrey
Lee Goddard struck his maiden fifty to bolster Derbyshire from 102-5 to 273-6 at stumps against Champions Surrey.
Goddard, released last year but back on a match-by-match basis, shared 149 with Graham Wagg, who chose a good moment to hit his first fifty for the county.
After a delay of 45 minutes due to bad light, Derbyshire lost Steve Stubbings with the third ball of the match.
But the seventh-wicket century stand, a Derbyshire record against Surrey spanning 54 overs, lifted home spirits.
