Surrey in battle to avoid defeat
County Championship D2, Bristol (day three, close): Gloucestershire 459 & 329-8d v Surrey 288 & 44-1
Surrey ended day three in Bristol on 44-1, still needing another 457 to win as Gloucestershire enjoyed another fruitful day against them.
After Surrey had lost their final first innings wicket for the addition of a single run, the hosts rattled up 329-8 in 84 overs before declaring.
Steve Adshead and Hamish Marshall each hit bright half-centuries to leave 15 overs of bowling at Surrey's top order.
Steve Kirby's early removal of Scott Newman gave the hosts an early boost.
There was a collector's item early in the day - a first wicket since 2003 for Surrey skipper Mark Butcher, having his first bowl of the season.
He sent down five overs for figures of 1-8, having Craig Spearman caught at mid-wicket after Gloucestershire had opted against imposing the follow-on.
