Savage Butcher flays Glamorgan

County Championship, Division Two, The Oval: Surrey 397-7 v Glamorgan

Skipper Mark Butcher smashed his fourth Championship century of the season as Surrey notched 397-7 against Glamorgan.

He shared a club record sixth-wicket stand against the Welsh county of 192 with Azhar Mahmood, who made 101.

Kiwi James Franklin, only allowed to bowl 20 overs per day in agreement with New Zealand officials, had earlier taken three for four in 15 balls.

That included Mark Ramprakash, who hit Robert Croft for two sixes and passed 2,000 Championship runs during his 77.

Franklin had bowled 16 of his agreed allocation but bowled his other four later in the day before the new ball was taken, finishing with 4-48.

Butcher hit 17 fours and two sixes before he was stumped in gloomy conditions late in the day.
