Benning shines again for Surrey

Pro40 Division Two, Guildford: Surrey 232-4 bt Kent 229-9 by six wickets
Surrey cruised to a six-wicket Pro40 win over Kent after tight bowling and some big hitting from James Benning.

England allowed Geraint Jones (41) to play and things looked to be going well when he and Darren Stevens (81) put on 73 but Kent could muster only 229-9.

That never looked like being enough at Guildford, particularly after Benning blasted 71 off only 51 deliveries.

Skipper Mark Butcher made an unbeaten 52 and together with Azhar Mahmood saw Surrey home with three overs to spare.

Kent struggled to get the home seamers away with Mahmood (2-29) bowling an economical stint.

India leg-spinner Anil Kumble helped maintain the control and once Benning got going the result was never in doubt.

He smashed 15 fours, with Amjad Khan coming in for some rough treatment to concede 58 off seven overs, to make it easy for the other batsmen.
